Magnetized Rechargeable Batteries

"Magnetized Current Collector Combined with Magnetic Shielding Means," is a technology we have created that can be used to magnetize and greatly enhance many of the standard rechargeable batteries already in widespread use.

Two patents on magnetized battery current collectors, a relatively minor change in the process of industrial battery production greatly reduces the internal resistance in the battery. By so doing, there is a big jump in the electrical energy available for useful work that would ordinarily have been lost as unusable heat.

We expect to prove through our ongoing research program that losses due to electrolyte resistance will be reduced during recharging as well. The rechargeable battery benefits the consumer by increasing the length of time the laptop, automobile etc runs and lowers the home electricity bill for recharging.

Our research points to another offshoot benefit of this reduction in internal resistance. The magnetized battery should be rechargeable at higher currents with less heat, and less damage to the battery caused by the recharging chemical reaction. This simple magnetizing process also increases the ability of batteries to respond to sudden increases in demand as might occur when the driver of an electric car attempts to safely pass another car on a narrow road.

Finally, MHDT batteries should have a significantly longer useful life, as the magnetic stirring created during the recharging causes a much smoother plating of the electrical collector plates (See the Science Page for a more detailed explanation of the electrochemical events).

The O'Brien Magnetizer ™

The O'Brien Magnetizer™, trademarked OBMII and patented was developed to magnetize the plates (or specially designed current collectors) on which all batteries are based and which form the core of the patent discussed above. A new patent application has been has been submitted to the USPTO and also to Smart & Biggar, Patent lawyers in Vancouver in preparation to begin overseas patenting.

This apparatus allows rapid and reliable magnetization and is now ready for pre-industrial application.

In the process, powerful permanent magnets rotate in two contra-rotating cylinders at high speed very close to substrates destined to be current collectors or electrodes in electrochemical devices including batteries. They permanently magnetize the substrate to greatly reduce the electrolyte resistance.

The Magnetized Supercapacitor

In the same vein as the battery, a magnetized supercapacitor will be developed which shares the magnetized battery's low internal resistance.

A supercapacitor can be thought of as a lower storage, higher output battery. Such supercapacitors are used in products such as computers, hybrid and fuel cell powered vehicles, radios and many other electrical systems.

This, our company's third technological innovation through a unique process markedly reduces the internal resistance of appropriate supercapacitors - resulting in significant increases in usable energy per unit of weight and size, while also allowing recharging with greatly reduced heat losses.

In short, a magnetized supercapacitor has more energy per unit weight and size, a markedly reduced cost to charge and can be used to enhance the performance of all battery systems and hydrogen fuel cells, magnetized or not.

The Fast Charger

The Fast Charger is a combination of the magnetized batteries and the magnetized supercapacitor to both capture surges of current from regenerated braking and pass the current on to charge magnetized batteries. The Fast Charger Patent can readily be installed as an on-board charger with plug-in capabilities to ordinary wall outlets of 15 amps and 110 V capacities.

The Hydrogen Evolution

The Hydrogen Evolution patent concerns lowering the resistance in a hydrogen evolution cell electrolyzing water and is aimed at the fuel cell car and the petroleum industry as well as any other industry that needs hydrogen.

There are many, as many as ten, patents pending although some will not be granted and others will be abandoned as an overall patent containing all the uses of magnetohydrodynamics in electrochemical devices is pursued in the US and overseas.

In the mining industry, smelting of ores is being rapidly abandoned in favour of hydrometallurgy where metal values are put into solution and now require to be recovered by solvent extraction or electrowinning. To electrowinn zinc, the problem of fractals, or excresences growing out from the main deposition face requires attention and expense. Fractals are avoided if magnetized collector plates are used because of the intense MHD stirring. Most base metals can be electrowon and refined at lower capital and running cost using magentized electrodes or collector plates.
